socmed entropy

A mere few months after I earnestly spruiked it, Pinboard might be dying.

The owner has been absent/unresponsive/not very helpful before, but this might really be it. I've downloaded an archive of my bookmarks, which was simple, but I'm really going to miss the functionality. Having a neatly tagged, easily searchable archive of bookmarks at my fingertips... I said this on twt: sometimes people ask me about canon stuff because I almost always know it, and the reason I know it is because I bookmark and tag things carefully!

Was it not enough for the internet to take twitter away from me? must you take my little bookmarks too???

I've downloaded my twitter archive too, coming in at a sweet 10 GB. When one actually opens it, it's a very useful searchable archive which is all neatly organised and everything but also it's 10 GB lol I put it immediately on my external hard drive to free up the space again.

I also namesquatted on Mastodon and Cohost because why not. The fact that DMs are not private on Mastodon, that tagging someone in a private message brings them into the conversation, that you could be blocked from entire other instances if someone on your instance pisses them off, or that your instance might just DIE because the administrator is no longer interested - none of this makes me feel very confident. I cannot be bothered to figure out Cohost yet, this one week waiting period means I can't even really play with it.

Must everything break at once...

When it comes to Cohost, so far all I'm seeing is pretty much twt clone. I'm not really trying to understand it further, but it's also quite the wasteland... Anyway I'll add you on there anyway! I need to see if Mastodon is something I'm into, I should probably namesquat there too...

I've been playing a bit with Mastodon through the use of the Tusky app (only available for Android, I think), and I'm liking it. It feels even more twitter clone to me than Cohost does. Maybe the interface is more simplified on Tusky? Anyway I have three friends there so it is painfully slow but I'm starting to check out some of the tags to see if it's worth communicating with strangers.
