AleXa at the Metro
In western media AleXa's probably best known for representing her home state Oklahoma in 2022's American Song Contest (the American version of the Eurovision franchise) which she won - good for her! What an absolute oddity of a competition! I didn't think much of the contest overall (I am very much a Eurovision person, because I am Australian and we love Eurovision, it's a tradition) but I saw a few of her performances and she really brought it.
I've followed her on and off since debut and I quite like AleXa but her songs don't particularly stand out for me, tbh. My opinion of her music didn't change much. About half her songs sound the same to me, they have the same kind of beats and concept, and even the choreo looks a bit samey. She has a 'tough girl' image often paired with science fiction concepts and I like them theoretically but they're just not that catchy to me… The other half of her setlist was a mix of ballads and lighter pop songs - the latter were the most fun for me.
That said, even though not won over by her songs, I thought AleXa herself was very cute and a great performer. She's tiny, her four dancers easily taller than her, but she attacks the stage with enthusiasm, she's a good dancer, and she is sweetly charming. Her banter with the crowd was cheesy but endearingly so!
The crowd was very loud and enthusiastic, but only half-filling the theatre even though as a nation we're starved of kpop. Stray Kids and Twice and Blackpink can sell out arenas, but for a small act like AleXa it seems it's still a wip.
A few moments that stood out to me:
- Trying to do the Aussie accent lol
- Waving a pride flag and picking up a pair pokemon, very cute
- She asked everyone to hold up their lightsticks and identified most! Twice, Stray Kids (huge scream), Seventeen, etc… That was really adorable.

She seems like a sweetheart, and I did love her performance of Dove Cameron's Boyfriend that she did at one of her shows? That was very cute!
