Rent (28 November, COEX Artium)
This was my first Rent experience, having somehow skipped the whole cultural phenomenon despite being the right age for it. This production was entirely in Korean - haha!

We went for the cast - Solji from EXID played Mimi and Jo Kwon played Angel on this night's performance. (SF9 Taeyang was playing Roger on other nights, and I wish I could've seen him too!) It was cute seeing people lining up to take photos with the cast photo of their fave actors.

As mentioned I've never seen Rent before. "Don't worry, it's just the same as La Boheme," [personal profile] proteinscollide told me breezily. I have in fact seen La Boheme, but do I recall it? Not really. I spent the interval reading up on the plot of Rent on Wikipedia LOL.

So large swathes of the story went over my head, but I did enjoy the songs and the dancing. Solji was wonderful. The lesbian couple were wonderful. Jo Kwon and Angel's boyfriend were wonderful. Roger the actor was great actually, though Roger the character seems like a loser.

I don't know if I would see this again in English - I didn't like the songs that much and the story seemed so over the top - but it was a fun thing to see once.

Woodz (29 November, Jamsil Indoor Stadium)
Woodz's concert was all but sold out, on the first of two nights in a row. The show was staged in the round, so Jamsil Indoor Stadium felt even more full than it would have otherwise.

It was a big show in every sense of the word. Right from the start, the show began with a 4 piece live band, dozens of dancers, intense lighting and dancing, Woodz in full idol mode - it was really impressive. Later he switched to rock ballads, with his band and his guitar, and alternated between the two. He was great in both modes but I think he really shone when he danced. He has such joy when he dances, he has a cheeky charm, it really feels like he just loves being up there.

The production made the most of being in the round. Even up in the nosebleeds, I never felt like I had a bad view and there was always something happening. The use of lights and video screens was so effective. During Drowning, when the stage looked like it was pouring with rain and the lightsticks in the audience rippled upwards, from the lowest to the highest seats like rising waters, as his voice soared over it all - it was so good.

Drowning was the big show stopper of course but it was so delightful for me when he played Bump Bump. During the encore he did songs on request, actually taking requests from audience members, which is so unusual in such a big arena show - and SO glad he did Love Me Harder! And I didn't realise until afterwards looking at the setlist that he played about 5 new or unreleased songs during this show. That's so many!

Seeing him live in a big stage like this, seeing him command the stage so confidently, was so good. I kept thinking about how he had debuted and debuted again, gone through survival shows, the heartbreak of X1 disbanding - and then to suddenly and unexpectedly blow up while enlisted in the military when Drowning went viral. It's an amazing story. Glad I got to see this show.

Another show where I did not know the group well, but had a good time even if I was not converted to stan-dom.

We had soundcheck with our tickets so we got to see the group perform a few songs and have a little banter. Ten and Yangyang had a yaoi moment where Ten intently brushed hair from Yangyang's face - congratulations to them!

The show itself was fun. Although the layout was all flat, no elevation to the seats, we had a good view of the thrust stage and everyone exercised sensible phone etiquette (phones at eye height). The VCRs were all very gothic, with dark magic and vampires and moody lighting in a mansion. Overall I enjoyed the show more than I expected - they are an entertaining group and for me their songs were more enjoyable live than on record. I do like Ten a lot, but Xiaojun was also quite a stand out as a performer.

The ments were mostly in Mandarin, which I cannot understand, with some Cantonese from Xiaojun and Hendery, of which I could understand some but not all. They also showed a preview of their Winter album after the show, cue much excitement from fans.

It was quite interesting observing HK fan etiquette with freebies. They would really only give you a freebie if they were sure you liked that member. So [personal profile] tullycat, with her Ten PC prominently displayed on her bag, got given lots of Ten freebies - whereas I got nothing until I hung my Kun soundcheck pc from my bag, at which point I started getting Kun freebies!

Unsurprisingly for a Hong Kong show, there were very few visibly Western fans. Also interesting, there are no bag size restrictions so many fans had MASSIVE bags stuffed with plushies (both fanmade and official), pcs, slogans, etc.

My second time seeing Viviz. We had seats from the balcony level in Town Hall so a nice elevated view. I enjoyed it because Viviz are charming and sexy and great performers. This was their first time in Australia and it was sweet that they gave a shout-out to a fan they met in the fansign who had been waiting since their Gfriend days.

They did some cute ments about Sydney, such as the three members all eating alone and texting each other, and getting to see the Opera House. SinB said that her carrier (her carry-on bag, judging from photos) broke and she was so angry about it!

They did some games, answering questions on post-it notes. For representative Australian animals, they said they had already answered this in Melbourne and they were a quokka, wombat and kangaroo. The song they listen to lately is Gfriend. They spotted someone in the audience who they saw doing a Mister Mister cover in the street the day before and got very excited, that was cute. They had a challenge to dance with a straight face, which Umji failed twice! And they briefly did solo dances.

For the end photo of the crowd, Eunha threatened that anyone who didn't make a heart would be zoomed in on insta story LOL.

I do think being a trio limits their choreo somewhat - they tend to repeat the same group formations with their back-up dancers - and at times the setlist felt tonally very similar, but it was still a good show.

This was a showcase as part of an event called K Culture Planet, run by the Korean Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), a Korean government initiative. Tickets were free, but limited, with about 2000 people in attendance. More on that later.

Carriageworks Bay 17 is entirely flat, no elevation at all. With the floor divided into 3 sections, and everyone holding their phones up, it wasn't a great view in section B where I was standing. There was a massive screen, but alas it only showed the performers for part of each song - the visual effects and backgrounds were cool but I would rather see them dancing! Still, for a free show, can't complain too much I guess.

After an introduction from the President of KOCCA and a brief sizzle reel, ONF took the stage first. This was their first visit to Australia so I was very glad to see them and hope they can come back for a full show. Their brief half hour set was good, but you KNOW they have so many more bangers. The setlist included Beautiful Beautiful, The Stranger, Bye My Monster, Ugly Dance and a couple others whose titles escape me.

They were charming. Wyatt especially was appreciated loudly when he flexed, unbuttoned his vest, and finally discarded it. He was also the quasi-MC, speaking the most in English. Seungjun was a cutie who talked a lot, Yuto a cutie who talked little. Changyun is always cute and so handsome and I guess he is my bias lol. MK can really sing and Hyojin is so handsome.

Then there was a break of about 15 minutes where they just showed k-content ads. Gotta get that sponsor money!

NMIXX came on to huge screams. The cheers for ONF were good but definitely this was an NMIXX crowd, with them riding high on their Blue Valentine success. When Lily asked if this was anyone's first time with NMIXX a lot of people said yes which surprised me, because they played the Hordern a few months ago in a much bigger show!

Great setlist: they played Blue Valentine, Spinning on It, Dice, Love is So Lonely, Dash, Know About Me, and Love Me Like. I could see even less than I could during ONF, but I can confirm all of them are very beautiful, Lily is a delight, Haewon is my cutie, and Bae's current styling is just chef's kiss perfect.

Both groups were compelled to mention the K Culture Planet thing. "I hope you enjoyed the K Culture exhibition!" And in ONF's case, when they took the audience photo, ONF said "ONF" and we had to say "K Culture Planet". I refrained lol.

So let me explain the K Culture Planet thing. KOCCA set up this very basic exhibition the week preceding the show where you could go get promoted at (for various k-things - beauty, drama, fashion, etc) and then spin a wheel to win free tickets to the concert. To me it seemed very massively underadvertised and underattended.

It just seems crazy to me you would fly out NMIXX for one night and ONF right before their comeback to this tiny showcase. If KOCCA was really serious about promoting Korean culture, note that NMIXX played a show to 5000 a few months ago and Twice played to over 20,000 people the weekend before - you cannot tell me this tiny event preaching to the converted moved the needle at all in comparison to those huge platforms. I benefited, so I'm not mad about it, it just really seemed more of an excuse for KOCCA to justify their budget!

First of two nights in Sydney for the "This Is For" tour. Our tickets were in B reserve, so quite far up and with some obstruction to the video screens, but they were fine.

The show is quite different in terms of production and pacing from the previous tour. With the show staged in the round, the stage is divided into three sections. Most of the show takes place on the middle main stage, with some stages on the two side stages. There is some amazing lighting and laser effects, and there are a couple of key props which are quite interesting - notably Dahyun's piano - but for the most part few props are used.

In terms of pacing, this is a snappy setlist with few pauses. It felt more geared towards a general audience than a kpop audience in the sense that there's very few ments (only the introduction and then a few interstitials) and the show is quite tight, finishing easily under 3 hours. Unlike previous tours, there is no encore roulette and to me it felt like there were less unchoreographed or spontaneous moments.

They are still amazing performers and they always seem so joyous. It was Jeongyeon's birthday and we all sang happy birthday to her, and she pretended to chomp on a couple of her members, and it was generally adorable. Momo and Nayeon and Jeongyeon were all flirty with each other at various moments and all of them really worked the stage.

I thought the solo stages (all solo songs from the latest album) were quite brief, sometimes too brief, but had some interesting staging. When they're all together as a group, I find Jihyo's and Momo's charisma, and to a lesser extent Nayeon, sometimes overwhelming, I look at them so much - in solos, it's easier to see some of the quieter members shine. I particularly found Tzuyu (she's grown in confidence so much!), Jeongyeon (VEGAS COWGIRL) and Dahyun (with her piano and her dramatics) the most distinct.

Although there was no encore roulette, it was nice that they kept the encore wait audience dancealongs, some were really cute and/or talented. It was a fun crowd, not totally sold out, but probably at 95% capacity.

Out of the times I've seen Twice perform, this was one of the less satisfying shows. It wasn't a full group lineup, with Chaeyoung absent for health reasons, and Sana was not at full health and was seated for the first half of the show. I also found the sound mixing not quite right - although it's great to have a live band, often I felt like the music was competing against the members - it was a relief to have more moderate volume music for the solo stages.

It can be so interesting seeing a group that you don't know that well. Sometimes, it's enough to tip you over into being a fan - in fact I fell into kpop as a fandom through seeing two groups I didn't know well at all - but I think with longer exposure, and having seen so many groups, I am less likely to be concert pilled these days.

That happened to be the case for this show, which I thought was a good show with solid VCRs and performance, but did not convert me.

As performers I think Chenle was my concert bias, he got so many great vocal parts and he had good stage presence. Jeno is designated sexy member and great performer, with handsome loser energy (he reminded me of Juyeon and Mingyu). Jaemin seemed like the mood maker to me and I think I can finally recognise him!

I saw numerous ships which I later found out were mostly non-governmental which was also interesting in itself. I'm sure the mahae shippers saw what they wanted to see, but as an outsider I thought it was barely present!

This show was a lot of fun. It wasn't sold out (it was also the same night as G-Dragon) but the venue was pretty full and the atmosphere was good. I have enjoyed StayC a lot through their career and this show was such a good reminder of how many viral pop hits they have to their name. It's wild hearing GPT, Run2U, ASAP and Teddy Bear all in a row - soo many earworms! Seeing their choreo live also drove that home, so many simple but instantly catchy point dances.

I went into the show knowing Yoon basically, because she's so tall and beautiful. Going out, I was charmed by Sumin (she is so cute and extroverted; also the former leader?!) and Sieun (not to be confused with her co-leader, Seeun, what the hell) was proficient and adorable in English.

Some random notes:

  • Sumin did the "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" chant too slowly and we all laughed
  • The unit stages were fun, my fave was definitely Yoon and Sumin's Fakin'
  • Yoon rubbed Sumin's abs, they definitely seemed like the flirtier side of the stage
  • During ASAP Sumin did a solo dance which the others were meant to follow but as a prank they all just stood still. "I will write about this in my diary," Sumin said afterwards, pretending to sulk. "I thought you would say, write it in my death note," Sieun said. Very cute and funny.
  • They talked about their imminent comeback, I Want It
  • Sieun said "I was bloody happy" lol cute
  • Apparently they do a random song each show. At this one, it was Diamond.
  • For the encore they walked through the crowd and just like at NMIXX, the crowd control was utterly absent and it was a mess.
  • They did a cover of Sia's Cheap Thrills in the encore.

May 2025

ablume - Echo
Really glad these girls are debuting again and getting another chance. This is cute!

MEOVV - Drop Top
Continues their catgirl theme. I am enjoying their career so far a lot.

Yuta - Twisted Paradise
This reminded me of DPR Ian and My Chemical Romance, in the best way.

Irene and Seulgi - Tilt
This didn't quite live up to the level I was hoping for, based on the teaser photos, but the song is pretty good.

June 2025

Primrose - Cinema
Listening to this I was just like "this is pure kpop". Filmed in Finland!

Ateez - Lemon Drop
They look damp.

ARTMS - Icarus
Been a while since I saw a long cinema-type MV! I don't think every artist should start releasing 14 minute art films but it was nice to see this one, it's weird in a good way.

XLOV - 1 & Only
Really cool visuals.

fromis_9 - Like You Better
Summery! Just super happy for them.

Wonho - Better Than Me
Beautiful throwback to the 00s. Could definitely be an NSYNC b-side.

After performing in Sydney a couple of years ago, on a festival line up with The Boyz and Infinite, it was great to see NMIXX back again for a full concert - this time including a show in Melbourne, Lily's hometown. For this show at the Hordern, it was full though not totally sold out on this cold winter's night. On entry we were handed some freebies: an official poster and pc (I got Jiwoo), and a fan freebie with a bracelet.

The theme of the show was a science lab, which resulted in some utterly dorky and silly VCRs with the girls mixing up potions with themes such as "love" "rockstar" and "alpha" and drinking them because of an impending bomb or something. It made nil sense!

The show was a lot of fun, they are enjoyable performers and they have some great songs. Lily was so cute, Haewon charmed me (my concert bias!), they all had their moments on stage. The momentum of the show ebbed and flowed somewhat, partly due to an extended games ment, so the pacing could have been tightened up; and I do wish there were more recent songs.

Some moments:
  • Lily said she cracked up during one song because Haewon made a silly face at her; and Haewon said she thought she was being cool.
  • Lily taught Haewon to say "prawns on the barbie"
  • The relay drawing game went on way too long. They did six drawings! SIX! That said it did have some cute moments:
    - Lily guessing kangaroo: "So easy! Well there is the other one but you wouldn't know that" (she meant wallaby). Bae was quite good at drawing.
    - They collectively drew the worst Sydney opera house good lord but it was cute that they tried to get everyone to sing opera
    - The word to guess was 'lawyer'. A mess. An audience member drew a picture for Sullyoon. Chaos
  • For their cover, they did NCT's Kick It.
  • At one point Haewon and Lily sang a bit from 4 Non-Blondes.
  • Lily: we're 50 and you're 50 and you gave 100 so together we're 150 yay maths!
  • When it was encore time, they walked around in the crowd which was a bad idea in this venue - there's no barriers between any sections, so people were leaving their seats on the floor and in the stands to rush over to them, it was total chaos. Do not recommend.
  • In the encore they did cover of 5 Seconds to Summer's She Looks So Perfect which Lily said was an iconic Australian song for her generation lol.
  • Lily got her Swiftie fanchant moment by getting the crowd to shout "Sydney!" ala Blank Space.
  • Men were yelling at Sullyoon during her ment; she was like okay thanks…
  • For Break the Wall they said wave your lightsticks, any lightstick is fine! They spotted a candybong in the crowd.
  • For the finale they did neverending Home.
  • A few Aussie phrases they left the stage with: you ripper, crikey, and of course Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi.

Ampers&one - Kick Start
Had to include this because they went FULL catboy.

ifeye - Nerdy
Loved the dreamy pop vibes.

VVS - Tea
It's a 5 girl assassin squad! Action movie level violence.

BEAST (Highlight) - Chains
Cool to see them back and this is a solid song.

MEOVV - Hands Up
Their solid run of tracks continues.

Astro - Moon
Astro with various friends of Moonbin... This is not my type of song but given the context, I did start crying while watching this. So.

It was an absolutely pouring cats and dogs, windy cold rainy night, and the venue wasn't the easiest to get to - so I'm glad this show was enjoyable. EVNNE were very charming and funny, lots of banter, and they had fun stages, starting from some of their harder songs, then some sunnier and poppier ones in the middle and later. The racing-themed VCRs weren't that exciting but tbh I wasn't expecting them to even have VCRs so that was fine!

They had three unit stages: a rap stage with Keita and Jihoo; Hanbin, Junghyun and Jeonghyeon did a performance/dance stage; and Seungeon and Yunseo had a vocal stage. For their covers medley, they performed Enhypen's Sweet Venom, NCT 127's Walk, and Seventeen's Pretty U.

I didn't know the members going in, and could only recognise Hanbin. I can see why he's the centre and why he came so close to making ZB1 - he's charismatic and has star quality. Keita as the tiny leader was very charming and full of jokes, he made me laugh. I found it quite funny/cute that Jihoo (the maknae) was very wide-eyed boy through the whole show except when he was wearing a cap and rapping, when he became all swag. All of them had good banter and interactions with each other.

For the encore, they did the expected 3 songs, but then they stuck around to do another 3 songs, repeats of songs they had done earlier (Crown, Trouble, and one other I forget - Role Model I think). So I'm going to take that as they liked us, they really liked us…

What I did not realise was that every ticket had send-off, so at the end of the show we attempted to make our way out - only to be BLOCKED by a staff member who was adamant that none of us could leave before send-off. I had an early start the next day and the show was already running longer than I expected so I would've loved to go home! Instead I got a 10 second wave goodbye to them while the staff hustled us out the door lol. It was very funny!

Some random notes:

  • One of the members complimented the coffee (ah he knows how to flatter Australians) and the weather (I do hope he meant Saturday because that Sunday, as mentioned, was DISMAL).
  • One of the members mentioned Keita getting lazier with the choreo. Keita: "yes because I'm tired!"
  • They did sexy ments, very cringey, with Seungeon pretending to show his abs. He said "Come back in two years" to see the real thing lol. Other member reactions to sexy ments time: "I don't even know why you guys like this" and "I want to go home."
  • For encore, Hanbin came out wearing a koala headband - cute.
  • A couple of members said "thanks heaps" and they did "Aussie Aussie Aussie" a couple of times lol.
  • Surprisingly a lot of talk about coming back again to Australia.

I fell behind early this year and have been struggling to catch up ever since so. Here's a bunch of links.

I've been following Dreamcatcher since their debut and enjoy them a lot. I saw them in 2019 when they came to Sydney and played a very simple show with no videos or VCRs at all - they were amazing, great performers. Although I haven't vibed with their later titles quite as much as their older ones (Deja Vu is still their peak era for me) I was really glad they decided to tour Sydney again.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, the news broke that Dami, Handong and Gahyun are leaving their agency at the end of the month. Jiu, Yoohyeon and Sua will promote as a trio, and Siyeon will be starting a band. A lot of news to take in! I started to think this might be my last chance to ever see them as 7 members.

However, during the show, the members were at pains to say that they would continue as 7. Dami said, "this is not the e-n-d, it is a-n-d," and they said they hoped to be back. Knowing how these things go, it might be a long wait, maybe a very long wait - I'm not going to hold my breath but I definitely feeling more encouraged.

Sydney Town Hall was a surprising choice of venue. Literally never seen a live band of any kind there. I have seen plays, talks, panels, and choral performances but never a live band or pop group! Standing on the floor near the back, I have to say the sightlines weren't great, I saw parts of the show but couldn't really see all the members at the same time.

It did feel very odd that they did a wintery Christmas block of songs on a very hot Australian night in March, and I am wistful for the many songs they did not perform (curse of having a long good discography).

On the other hand so good to see Deju Vu (loved the arrangement), Boca, Scream, Jazz Bar, and I find all the members charming. So cute seeing Sua with an octopus plush headband at the end. They were good performers, the vocalists were vocalling, it was a good night.

This show, like previous ones at the Metro, had a decent turnout but was not sold out, with the back section curtained off. But there were enough fans to create a nice buzz. The guys standing near us, who I was worried would be industry people attending 'ironically', turned out to be fans who knew the words!

The show was so much fun. It was marred by some technical issues, which I'll get into, but my overall impression is so positive. Billlie are really good performers - dance line so magnetic, vocal line so talented - and they have such a great catalogue of songs.

I knew Moon Sua and Tsuki, of course, but the member who caught my eye the most in this show was Siyoon. She has 'born for the stage' written all over her, she seemed like she was having the best time in the world, and I loved her flirty energy.

Their rapport with the crowd grew over the course of the show, starting out feeling quite rehearsed in their ments and getting more spontaneous at the end. The group had a lot of fun with the "Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi" back and forth, later changing it to "Billlie Billlie Billlie, oi oi oi" to their delight and the audience's.

At one point Tsuki asked the crowd to shout out their wishes. One audience member asked for an air kiss, which was cute. Another asked them to perform Ring x Ring, as it was one of their favourite songs, so all the members sang a verse acapella - I loved this, because Ring x Ring is one of my favourite songs too!

For the unit stages, Haram and Suhyeon covered If I ain’t got you and really showed off their vocals. Then the other members came back for a couple of dance covers of Anti-fragile and Armaggedon, and they killed that too.

There were a few technical issues. There were awkwardly long pauses between songs, as though the sound desk hadn't cued the next track correctly. At one point there was even a 10 minute intermission, no VCRs, so random. They had no outfit changes, but took long breaks to switch mics, which also seems like something other shows handle more deftly.

After the break, they played a long VCR which featured Remembrance Candy dance mafia (all members dance and wear headphones, but one member is hearing a different song, spot that one member) - followed by the live stage of Remembrance Candy, so we heard it 3x in a row essentially, which was not ideal.

I also thought in the songs without choreo, they could have moved around the stage more. Most of the time they just stood in their official standing order (helpful for me as someone learning their names, but not interesting to look at). Only once did they move around the stage during the song - and the crowd loved it!

Still, I had a really good time and I hope they come back.
