This was a showcase as part of an event called K Culture Planet, run by the Korean Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), a Korean government initiative. Tickets were free, but limited, with about 2000 people in attendance. More on that later.

Carriageworks Bay 17 is entirely flat, no elevation at all. With the floor divided into 3 sections, and everyone holding their phones up, it wasn't a great view in section B where I was standing. There was a massive screen, but alas it only showed the performers for part of each song - the visual effects and backgrounds were cool but I would rather see them dancing! Still, for a free show, can't complain too much I guess.

After an introduction from the President of KOCCA and a brief sizzle reel, ONF took the stage first. This was their first visit to Australia so I was very glad to see them and hope they can come back for a full show. Their brief half hour set was good, but you KNOW they have so many more bangers. The setlist included Beautiful Beautiful, The Stranger, Bye My Monster, Ugly Dance and a couple others whose titles escape me.

They were charming. Wyatt especially was appreciated loudly when he flexed, unbuttoned his vest, and finally discarded it. He was also the quasi-MC, speaking the most in English. Seungjun was a cutie who talked a lot, Yuto a cutie who talked little. Changyun is always cute and so handsome and I guess he is my bias lol. MK can really sing and Hyojin is so handsome.

Then there was a break of about 15 minutes where they just showed k-content ads. Gotta get that sponsor money!

NMIXX came on to huge screams. The cheers for ONF were good but definitely this was an NMIXX crowd, with them riding high on their Blue Valentine success. When Lily asked if this was anyone's first time with NMIXX a lot of people said yes which surprised me, because they played the Hordern a few months ago in a much bigger show!

Great setlist: they played Blue Valentine, Spinning on It, Dice, Love is So Lonely, Dash, Know About Me, and Love Me Like. I could see even less than I could during ONF, but I can confirm all of them are very beautiful, Lily is a delight, Haewon is my cutie, and Bae's current styling is just chef's kiss perfect.

Both groups were compelled to mention the K Culture Planet thing. "I hope you enjoyed the K Culture exhibition!" And in ONF's case, when they took the audience photo, ONF said "ONF" and we had to say "K Culture Planet". I refrained lol.

So let me explain the K Culture Planet thing. KOCCA set up this very basic exhibition the week preceding the show where you could go get promoted at (for various k-things - beauty, drama, fashion, etc) and then spin a wheel to win free tickets to the concert. To me it seemed very massively underadvertised and underattended.

It just seems crazy to me you would fly out NMIXX for one night and ONF right before their comeback to this tiny showcase. If KOCCA was really serious about promoting Korean culture, note that NMIXX played a show to 5000 a few months ago and Twice played to over 20,000 people the weekend before - you cannot tell me this tiny event preaching to the converted moved the needle at all in comparison to those huge platforms. I benefited, so I'm not mad about it, it just really seemed more of an excuse for KOCCA to justify their budget!

After performing in Sydney a couple of years ago, on a festival line up with The Boyz and Infinite, it was great to see NMIXX back again for a full concert - this time including a show in Melbourne, Lily's hometown. For this show at the Hordern, it was full though not totally sold out on this cold winter's night. On entry we were handed some freebies: an official poster and pc (I got Jiwoo), and a fan freebie with a bracelet.

The theme of the show was a science lab, which resulted in some utterly dorky and silly VCRs with the girls mixing up potions with themes such as "love" "rockstar" and "alpha" and drinking them because of an impending bomb or something. It made nil sense!

The show was a lot of fun, they are enjoyable performers and they have some great songs. Lily was so cute, Haewon charmed me (my concert bias!), they all had their moments on stage. The momentum of the show ebbed and flowed somewhat, partly due to an extended games ment, so the pacing could have been tightened up; and I do wish there were more recent songs.

Some moments:
  • Lily said she cracked up during one song because Haewon made a silly face at her; and Haewon said she thought she was being cool.
  • Lily taught Haewon to say "prawns on the barbie"
  • The relay drawing game went on way too long. They did six drawings! SIX! That said it did have some cute moments:
    - Lily guessing kangaroo: "So easy! Well there is the other one but you wouldn't know that" (she meant wallaby). Bae was quite good at drawing.
    - They collectively drew the worst Sydney opera house good lord but it was cute that they tried to get everyone to sing opera
    - The word to guess was 'lawyer'. A mess. An audience member drew a picture for Sullyoon. Chaos
  • For their cover, they did NCT's Kick It.
  • At one point Haewon and Lily sang a bit from 4 Non-Blondes.
  • Lily: we're 50 and you're 50 and you gave 100 so together we're 150 yay maths!
  • When it was encore time, they walked around in the crowd which was a bad idea in this venue - there's no barriers between any sections, so people were leaving their seats on the floor and in the stands to rush over to them, it was total chaos. Do not recommend.
  • In the encore they did cover of 5 Seconds to Summer's She Looks So Perfect which Lily said was an iconic Australian song for her generation lol.
  • Lily got her Swiftie fanchant moment by getting the crowd to shout "Sydney!" ala Blank Space.
  • Men were yelling at Sullyoon during her ment; she was like okay thanks…
  • For Break the Wall they said wave your lightsticks, any lightstick is fine! They spotted a candybong in the crowd.
  • For the finale they did neverending Home.
  • A few Aussie phrases they left the stage with: you ripper, crikey, and of course Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi.

Although this event billed itself as a 'festival', there were only 3 artists on the lineup. The organisation as a whole was such a shambles - I did enjoy this show and I'm so, so glad to have seen it but I have to draw a line between the artists who were great and the organisation which was awful. But to the artists first:

Infinite opened the show, which honestly surprised me a bit as they were the most senior group on the line-up. They're mostly in their 30s now but this was their first visit to Australia - it's taken them all this time! And they've been on such a journey (I am still a bit sad Hoya left). One member was not present (I think still in the military? not sure) so it was a 5 member group, but given how small the odds seemed of ever seeing them at all, I'm really glad I got the chance and it was so nice to see so many fans in the crowd too. Infinite performed a bunch of their hits plus their newest title, and they seemed really charming and happy to be there. Dongwoo especially cracked me up, he was so larger than life and so funny.

Be Mine
Nothing’s Over
Love Letter
New Emotions
Paradise
Man in Love

NMIXX were next and it was a real hometown hero's welcome for Lily - she is not from Sydney lol but about 30 of her friends and family had flown up from Melbourne and in the ments she pointed them out in the crowd, two row of people distinguished by their hot pink vests. She is SO adorable and I am so glad she got to perform in Australia. As for their performance, I really do think they are a good group but their first couple of songs (O.O and Tank) were the ones that appeal to me least. As they progressed through the set, ending on their two most recent titles, I was so much happier. They're GOOD! JYP just needs to give them good songs!

O.O
Tank
Dice
My Gosh
Party O'Clock
Love Me Like This

Lily on bubble, getting excited about COLES AND ALDI she's so cute

Finally The Boyz! My favourites! I have seen them before, while I was on holiday in Europe in 2022, but I did not think they would ever come to Australia. So few groups do and this is not an especially strong fanbase for them. With all the troubles with this festival, I didn't even let myself get excited about it until the members started mentioning on bubble etc that they were actually going to the airport! They were getting on the plane!

They had a day off before the show and it was just SO nice that they got to see the harbour and Circular Quay - usually they joke that they bring the rain with them, but for these few days the sun was shining and the sky was so blue, so they saw Sydney at her best.

They only did 5 songs (which seems unfair, especially since the two other groups did 6 each) but I've never see them perform Roar or Lip Gloss before, and the other songs are all stone cold bangers that I love. It was also my first time seeing Eric! He was on hiatus when I saw them in Europe. (He did have to leave the stage briefly because he had a cramp - I hope he's okay!)

They were great headliners, they got everyone up on their feet for DDD and Thrill Ride, and it was just so good! They're performers who perform, as the kids would say. I loved seeing the unchoreographed moments too, with Hyunjae, Younghoon and Sunwoo getting sunglasses from the crowd and playing around with them, Eric and Sangyeon poking at Kevin's bare arms, Juyeon and also Kevin RUNNING back to the main stage to get to their spots in time, Jacob doing the "Aussie Aussie Aussie" chant (mercifully the only one of the night lol).

They said they were looking forward to coming back for a full concert ("30 songs!" Eric promised recklessly) and, well, I've heard that one from other groups before so I'll cross my fingers but won't hold my breath. If they do, I'll be so ready…

Maverick
Roar
Lip Gloss
DDD
Thrill Ride

Ok now all the things that were bad, none of them to do with the artists: long list of gripes )
