popliar: (seulgi bad boy)
This was the second of two nights of concerts. The show started at 4pm, very early but I guess Sunday shows do tend to start earlier. We were in the VERY back row in a very international patch. Perhaps yes24 blocks out whole sections for international buyers? Despite the distance, the show was very good.

I've seen people complaining online about not getting enough notice for sales and I get it but also it seems to be - kind of standard right now. These tickets went on sale about a month before the show, well after we'd bought plane tickets for this holiday, so it was just fortuitous timing. Few kpop groups are touring Australia at all right now, and SM groups almost never ever tour Australia at all, so this felt like my one big chance to finally see them and I am so glad I got to go.

Red Velvet were one of the kpop groups I liked earliest (they hooked me with Dumb Dumb when I was just getting into kpop) and I've liked them ever since. Not all of their songs have worked for me and they've had their troubles, but their highs for me have been simply god tier. Their combination of sexy, cute, witchy and murderous (often mashed up in compelling ways), their commitment to high concept, my love for SEULGI - it's all so good for me. This three-hour show covered songs from their entire career and it just showed their incredible range, how many hits and classic songs they've released, and what great performers they are.

At one point Wendy commented that the show had the same songs but a very different set list to the previous night's show. I didn't get it until I saw the set lists side by side later - they performed much the same songs (except for the encores) but in a totally different order. Our night started with the dark and sexy themes, and ended with lighter ones: they did dark and sexy, pink ballerina, summer fun, red and denim, then encores. The first night had it almost totally opposite! That was so interesting.

The strongest stretch for me was when they performed I Just, Peek-a-Boo, Bad Boy and Psycho in a row... I died. And the Bad Boy intro dances by the members... My god. I may never recover.

They were also cute and charming too, the two sides of idol concepts. As usual RV flip between the two and play on the gap between the two in the best way.

For one of the encores they played Zimzalabim which is honestly one of my most disliked RV titles (one of the most broadly disliked and divisive songs in their catalogue probably), but seeing it live with the whole crowd getting into it - okay I got the appeal for the first time. It's an effective party track, in the right context.

The framing device of the show was a music box, with a team of dancers (wonderful) performing intros and interludes and the girls rising up out of the music box for each 'act'.

One of the VCRs showed the dark and light sides of RV, with each member confronting their opposite themed self. It was such a cool VCR, it felt weird and witchy and inspired in the best RV way.

For the audience project, at each seat in the arena we had the usual cardboard fan banners with instructions on singing a fan song during the encore, and also an extra larger piece of cardboard for everyone to hold up at a certain time to spell out a message. Up at the back, our cards were all boring white lol but we held them up! And indeed on the video screens the message looked quite nice.

I copied the set list below from this helpful tweet though I am not sure why it says 4 encores. It felt like 2 to me!
